Tenali Rama, the beloved historical drama, continues to win hearts with its use of clever storytelling and
iconic characters. Known for his sharp wit and humor, the lead character Tenali has been enthralling
audiences with his problem-solving skills and his amusing dynamics with the cunning and witty
Tathacharya, played by the celebrated actor Pankaj Berry. The show has taken an exciting twist with
veteran actor Pankaj Berry stepping into a double role. Besides playing Tathacharya he is also seen
playing the role of Venkanna who is a look alike of Tathacharya.
Venkanna is a humble dhobi bearing an uncanny resemblance to Tathacharya. He has a habit of betting
on everything, which Rama takes advantage of. He is a quirky character and brings a fresh dose of
humor to the narrative. Venkanna, with an amusing simplicity and unique quirks, contrasts sharply with
Tathacharya’s sly and strategic nature. Tenali Rama (Krishna Bharadwaj) cleverly uses him to convey
important messages to the King Krishnadevaraya (Aditya Redij), adding layers of humor and intrigue
while keeping the audience thoroughly engaged. Pankaj’s exceptional versatility as an actor draws from
his rich theatre background and he meticulously performs the role of Venkanna with a distinct body
language, and mannerisms, ensuring both roles stand apart.
Pankaj Berry, playing the role of Tathacharya and Venkanna in Tenali Rama, said,
“As an actor, I love challenges, and playing two contrasting roles is an enriching experience. Venkanna
is such a fascinating and funny character, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed bringing him to life alongside
Tathacharya. On set, the energy has been incredible—there are so many moments where the cast and
crew burst into laughter at Venkanna’s antics, especially his interactions with Rama. The seamless
switch between these two personas, from Tathacharya’s sly demeanor to Venkanna’s quirky simplicity,
has even surprised my co-stars. I’m excited for viewers see Venkanna’s escapades add a unique spark
to Tenali Rama.”
